New Ortovox ABS Backpacks Look Great!
As a regular off-piste skier, should I invest in an avalanche airbag system?
At Henry’s Avalanche Talk, we will soon be adding an overview of the different types of airbag system that we’ve researched, and answering some of the questions we are often asked. For now, though, we have seen some great new products from Ortovox, in partnership with ABS.
Ortovox have produced 5 backpack models with removable ABS airbag systems (what they call M.A.S.S. – Modular Airbag Safety Systems). They are the first to provide an airbag with ergonomic straps for women. These female-specific packs are available in the 24 litre Free Rider, and the 30 + 7 litre Tour. These packs won a prestigious gold award at ISPO 2013, and will be on the market from this Autumn. See the Ortovox press release.
We like these Ortovox ABS backpacks for:
1. Their safety features; (twin ABS airbags, spinal protection system on the Free Rider, wide snug-fitting hip belt for extra security)
2. Their versatility: (detachable airbag system – conditions allowing, you can detach the airbag system, thereby gaining several litres in volume and up to 1880 g in weight; multi-functional ski-fastening system; easy adjustment options on the release grip – its height & angle can be changed and it can be set up for left or right-handed users, PLUS a stowable aluminium bracket protects the grip from unintended release; volume expansion option on the Tour)
3. Their comfort: (great ventilation systems; secure comfortable elastic hip belt; O-Flex back system on the Tour)
4. Their robustness: (strong aluminium clasps; strong abrasion-resistant ‘hypalon’ on the ski fastening system)
Free Rider ABS (See 1st of the 2 attached videos)
- 3 Models: 1 x 26 litre, 2 x 24 litre (one for men with slightly shorter torsoes and the other woman-specific)
- Removable Spinal Protection System which helps to protect your back against impact and compression
- Great ventilation
- Wide elastic hip belt with aluminium locking clasp to ensure a perfect fit and optimal protection
- Locking aluminium ski fastening system (skis, boards or snowshoes can be attached diagonally or crossed – not on the sides because of the way the airbags inflate)
Tour ABS (See 2nd attached video)
- 2 Models: 1 x 30 + 7 litre (women), 1 x 32 + 7 litre. By opening a central zipper, you get an extra 7 litres space – great for tours.
- Vent-O-Flex back system – O-shaped frame distributes weight evenly between the shoulders and hips, making it more comfortable on the back
- Good ventilation channels
- Multi-functional, robust ski fastening system – same as for the Free Rider
The Free Rider would be a great everyday choice, while the Tour would be perfect for a longer tour. I’m seriously interested….
